What goes around comes back around – especially with interior design.
We love retro designs and we will not deny that we get very excited when new art deco designs take us back to the times when crushed velvet and bright striking designs were cool. So, what statement pieces will you be using to bring a pinch of glamour from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s into your space?
Here is our tips on how to add art deco statement pieces to any room.
Rugs and carpets
Think patterned, chic colours. Not all art deco has to be vibrant, but it should stand out. Our favourite styles come from Havana fan prints with vintage colours such as burnt orange, dusty plumb reds on black chalky backgrounds.
If you want to go bright we suggest looking for cabone yellow with grey alternate geometric shapes. This will definitely be the talking point in any room – especially when using minimalist colours such as white for the rest of your space.
Bring out your wild side by taking advantage of using vintage animal stripes which were especially in style in the 1940’s.
Curtains and accessories
If you are a regular visitor to our blog, you will know that we love dressing our windows. We understand that it is often details like curtains that can transform a room.
Choose rich wood poles and fabrics with strong lines to create an eye-catching feature. Match the rich wood curtain poles with zebra wood side tables, arm chairs and side boards to enhance the look of your windows.
Why not add a splash of colour contrast by using accessories in your home? In the interior design industry we like to call these ‘sunbursts’.
A lot of art deco designs are dulled down using dark greys and blacks with steams of gold, burnt orange and light greys. By adding a small illuminous light feature or some zesty yellow pillows can bring your room to life. We must add, there only needs to be one or two key colour features added to achieve this look.
Depending on the look you want to achieve we suggest using streamlined shaped lighting to feature in rooms. We love this mirrored odeon table lamp from the Alexander & Pearl Boutique.
We advise keeping lighting all about the shape and less about the colour as they already stand out due to their own brightness.
Using a range of colours and textures to create your art deco interior is definitely the way forward. If you haven’t included any bright colours within your space using accessories or soft furnishings, you could decorate just one wall to create a feature within your room.
If you already have your heart set on a couple of brightly coloured soft furnishings, then tone down your curtains to avoid overkill. Instead add textured fan patterned wall paper with silvers, blacks and greys to make an impact.
