The benefits of an outdoor rug

David WilliamsTips and Advice

Outdoor rugs can make an outdoor space look luxurious and create an environment that is inviting. They make a big difference to a garden, especially if it is on the smaller side.

They are as ideal for garden rooms as they are for outdoor areas. To accentuate your outdoor space you don’t need an elaborate setting, just a few simple choices like adding outdoor rugs for style and comfort.

Outdoor rug materials

Unlike indoor rugs which are designed for indoor conditions, outdoor rugs are very different. They are made of highly durable, weather-resistant materials that will not be easily damaged by the harsh outdoor conditions.

They are also highly resistant to staining from dirt such as mud and won’t get ruined by rain. As they are specially designed to withstand mould and mildew, you can use them with complete confidence in your outdoor room or areas without being concerned about mould infestation.

Styles of outdoor rugs

Outdoor rugs come in a variety of colours and patterns which include geometrics and stripes which are among the most popular styles. There are also bold florals, tropical looks and novelty designs available.

Woven patterns appear to be the most popular due to the designs, colourfastness and durability. The best outdoor rugs are labelled ‘solution-dyed’. This means the colour was actually added to the chemicals used to create the fibre rather than having the yarns dyed after they were made.

The ‘solution-dyed’ method ensures that the rug is resistant to fading. That eliminates the concern for outdoor rugs, which often have very little shade from the sun. This type of colourfastness also helps solution-dyed rugs resist stains hold up better to cleaning than rugs coloured through other methods of dyeing, like yarn-dyeing and piece-dyeing.

Outdoor rug sizes

When choosing a rug for outside, you need to be aware of what is around you and in the area. Pay attention to fountains, outdoor buildings and trees and work out what would fit in terms of size, shape and design.

You also need to consider how much outdoor space you have and how that space is used. Consider what furniture you have out there and the shapes and sizes of these pieces. For example, a round patio table will generally always look better on a round rug. A seating area may look better with a square or rectangular rug to define the area.

If your rug is being used under a table, it should be wide enough that all chairs can be pulled out and all legs are still situated on the rug. Within a seating area or grouping, it is best to make sure all major pieces of furniture can have at least the front two legs on the rug. For this reason, oversized rugs are brilliant to cover the main area of a decking or patio. Always measure the area before you go outdoor rug shopping!

Can you have an outdoor rug with children?

If you have children in your family, an outdoor rug can help and support their development and learning. You can use an outdoor rug to create a comfortable space that is welcoming for them.

Avoid placing babies or young children on the cold or dirty ground. Allow them to play in a place that is comfortable and warm. Unlike blankets that can damp, outdoor rugs can be easily wiped clean. Outdoor rugs also have different textures that can stimulate their senses.

Children love to live on the floor. An outdoor rug can provide them with their own outdoor space, where they can enjoy the benefits of being outdoors in nature.

Decking and patio tiles can easily become worn out. When people walk over them, furniture knocks against them and when they are exposed to the elements of wind and rain. Outdoor rugs are great for protecting flooring from damage, one of the many benefits of adding outdoor rugs. Visit our showroom for more inspiration on outdoor living.
