Curtain ideas to dress your windows beautifully

David WilliamsTips and Advice

In this blog we’re going to take you through some of our favourite curtain ideas to dress your windows beautifully.

Hanging curtains or shades can have a transformative effect on a room. They add warmth and style to a drab space or hiding unfortunate views out the window. You can even create the illusion that you have more space than you really do. This can be done by exaggerating the appearance of ceiling height.

Window treatments may be something of an after-thought for some, but it shouldn’t be. After all, what has the potential to transform a space better than a breathtaking view, or a flood of light? So naturally, the way you dress your windowsmatters.

Dialling into what a space needs from its window treatments isn’t always easy. It combines a calculation of directional light that evolves throughout the day, the types of tasks that will take place in the room, and the level of formality required, but when the perfect solution is selected, it can really make any décor scheme sing.

Blend-in curtains

Curtains complete a room and a modern approach is to pair them tonally with the walls. Pick a fabric to complement the room colour scheme you already have, for a truly cohesive and enveloping look.

You’ll need to decide if you want the curtains to blend with the decor or to pop. For blending, pick curtains that are the same tone as the wall but a few shades darker, or choose a non-dominant subtle colour in the room.

A bold colour will work well if you’re looking to add some wow. Also keep in mind that in a space where the sun shines through unlined curtains, the colour will infuse the room.

Prints and patterns

If you have patterned furniture or bedding, stick with solid curtains. If you have solid-colour furniture or bedding, consider patterned curtains. For a subtle hit of style and energy, go for a small, neutral print, like dots or paisley. These read like texture from afar.  A large, graphic print in a colour that relates to the existing decor is daring but can be spectacular.

Light weight curtains

Light-filtering curtains are heavier than sheers. They offer a good amount of privacy, though if light is shining directly through them there might be some visibility to the other side. Light weight curtains won’t fully darken a space from outside light. They can be made from a wide variety of fabrics, so they’re versatile for many design styles. They’re ideal to provide some night time privacy in living spaces.

Shutters

Shutters are a more decorative alternative to blinds. They are typically made out of wood and can be painted or stained to match most room designs. They can be tilted open to offer some light into a space. Or they usually can be swung open for an unobstructed view. They don’t completely block light when closed, so they’re best for living spaces and bathrooms but not bedrooms.

Double pole

Hanging curtains on a double pole offers lots of versatility. A common combination is using a thicker and more decorative curtain material for the outer pole and hanging sheers on the inner pole. That way, you can close both types of curtains for maximum privacy and light blocking. But you also can close only the sheers to allow light into the space while still maintaining a bit of privacy.

This window treatment idea can work in living spaces, as well as bedrooms. It could be especially beneficial for an office if you need to diffuse a little light with the sheers during the day and want privacy at night with the thicker curtains.
