The History of William Morris
William Morris is not only a popular, stylish brand in modern times, but was a historic figure in the arts and crafts movement. Born in 1834, he was a pivotal figure in the design revolution that fought against industrial mass production.
His work actually stemmed from his political beliefs, adopting and expanding on John Ruskin’s beliefs regarding industrialisation. William believed that art should be a part of everyday living, which is incredibly evident in his variety of designs.
His brand began when founding ‘Morris & Co’, who prided themselves in handcrafted textiles and furniture. Designs created at that time such as ’Strawberry thief’ lasted the test of time, and are still widely recognisable now.
