How Shutters & Blinds Can Save You Money On Your Energy Bills

Chloe MenesseBrookside

Shutters and blinds are something people choose to elevate their home aesthetically, but not many know the hidden benefits to energy efficiency they have.

It’s actually estimated that heat gain and loss accounts for 30% of residential heating – this means a third of your energy use isn’t going towards your home! This is not only damaging to your bank account, but to the planet too.

We all know that double glazing and high-quality doors can be one way to fix this, but shutters and blinds provide an easier solution that’s often more wallet-friendly.

So how can they help?

The impact of shutters varies depending on factors that differ from house to house, however, all shutters can prevent heat loss and contribute to stopping cold air entering your warm home.

Energy efficiency can be increased even further if you choose your blinds and shutters carefully. Materials such as wood can be naturally thermally dynamic, providing an extra factor of protection against the great British cold. This isn’t to say alternate materials such as vinyl and plastics won’t be effective – some of them are a great choice if you’re worried about water damage. It’s all about choosing what’s best for you and your home.

At Brookside, we use both wooden and PVC shutter companies, with the option to provide blackout blinds behind them. We offer a range of designs to fit your kitchen, bedroom or bathroom perfectly and help your space feel light whilst still maintaining privacy. From traditional Venetian blinds to modern rollers, our creative team can help you find the perfect choice for your space.

Once you have your shutters or blinds installed, there are some tips and tricks you can utilise to help them do their job as best as possible.

Firstly, it’s a really helpful idea to keep your shutters or blinds open if you spot the sun coming out during the day to help to get heat into your home. The same applies during the summer when you want to keep your house cool – keep shutters and blinds down closed the day to keep the heat out. Just remember to close or open them when needed so your efforts aren’t wasted!

If you have the budget, it’s also a great idea to pair your blinds or shutters with curtains for double the insulation. This is great for insulation to reduce heat loss – but also helpful for better control of light and sound at night. The combination can also look very stylish and add extra flair to your room, allowing you to change the look of your windows without changing your shutters.

Not only are shutters and blinds heating homes, reducing people’s energy bills and looking stylish whilst doing it – a study by ESCORP/EU25 has found that they also can contribute to saving 80 million tonnes of CO2!
